Advanced Wine Appreciation

This advanced course has been designed to give students a deeper look into wine appreciation, and will further exercise students in the methodology of comparative analysis of wines made from the same grapes, but from different countries and regions.

Students will have the opportunity to taste and compare other more unusual red and white grape varieties from a number of old and new world wine regions, gaining an understanding of the importance of climate, soil, variety and cultural practices on the wine making process. In addition, students will be challenged through the introduction of blind tasting exercises.

Classes are limited to 10; six wine glasses will be provided for use during each class.

The course consists of six (6), 2-hour sessions; one night a week beginning at 7:00 p.m.

The cost of the course is $150.

Please note that the course will be conducted at a location in the Wrentham-Franklin-Norfolk area of Massachusetts.

Course Outline

The next class will be conducted over six (6) weeks on Friday evenings between 7:00pm and 9:00pm. Students will taste six wines during each class. Sanctioned INAO crystal glassware is provided.

  • Week One: White Grape Varieties - Comparative Analysis: Riesling & Gewurztraminer

  • Week Two: White Grape Varieties Comparative Analysis:Pinot Blanc & Chenin Blanc

  • Week Three: Red Grape Varieties Comparative Analysis: Petite Sirah & Zinfandel

  • Week Four: Red Grape Varieties Comparative Analysis: Barbera & Sangiovese

  • Week Five: Red Grape Varieties Comparative Analysis: Tempranillo & Nebbiolo

  • Week Six: Testing our palate. Blind Tasting Exercise.
