Intermediate Wine Appreciation

  • Do you already know something about wine but want to delve deeper in to the subject?

  • Are you interested in the comparative analysis of wines made in different countries from the same grape?

  • Are you interested in learning more about fortified and sparkling wines?

This intermediate course has been designed to give students a deeper look into wine appreciation, and will introduce students to the comparative analysis of wines made from the same grapes, but from different countries and regions.

Students will have the opportunity to taste and compare the classic red and white grape varieties from a number of old and new world wine regions, gaining an understanding of the importance of climate, soil, variety and cultural practices on the wine making process. In addition, a closer look at fortified and sparkling wines will be included.

Classes are limited to 10; six wine glasses will be provided for use during each class.

The course consists of six (6), 2-hour sessions; one night a week beginning at 7:00 p.m.

The cost of the course is $150.

Please note that the course will be conducted at a location in the Wrentham-Franklin-Norfolk area of Massachusetts.

Course Outline

Students will taste six wines during each class. Sanctioned INAO crystal glassware is provided.

  • Week One: Classic Red Grape Varieties. Comparative Analysis: Cabernet Sauvignon & Merlot.

  • Week Two: Classic Red Grape Varieties. Comparative Analysis: Syrah/Shiraz & Pinot Noir.

  • Week Three: Classic White Grape Varieties. Comparative Analysis: Chardonnay & Sauvignon Blanc.

  • Week Four: A closer look at fortified wines.

  • Week Five: A closer look at sparkling wines.

  • Week Six: Testing our palate. Blind Tasting Exercise.
