1998 Chateauneuf-du-Pape
Saturday, April 7, 2018
Time: 3:00pm
Location: Wrentham, MA

1998 Chateauneuf-du-Pape
Even though we made a recent survey of several wines from the magnificent 1998 vintage of Chateauneuf-du-Pape in October 2015, it seems appropriate to revisit these wines on their 20th anniversary. I fully expect this tasting to be magical and eye-opening, both for the exceptional quality that these wines have exhibited over the last twenty years, and also as a study of fine, older wines. This is exactly why we have a cellar - it is a bridge to the past that is so rarely crossed. At this event we will examine several wines from the 1998 vintage from several distinguished properties.

The grape has achieved greatness in the regions of Burgundy, France and is enjoying a growing success in California and Oregon in the US. Other winemaking countries have taken up the task of producing Pinot Noir, like New Zealand, but its production is a true labor of love. At this event we will a number of Pinot Noir based wines from a variety of regions, including its famous starting point of Burgundy, France.

Napa/Bordeaux Shootout VIII
Saturday, October 13, 2018
Time: 3:00pm
Location: Wrentham, MA

Napa/Bordeaux Shootout VIII
Back in 2004, we conducted a simulation of the famous 1976 tasting that pitted Cabernet-based wines from Napa Valley against the some of the best that Bordeaux had to offer. In 2007, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015 and most recently in 2017 we again reprised the famous standoff. Popular demand has brought this event back to Musings, so once again we will put these two regions to the test. At this event we will taste several wines in a reenactment of the historic 1976 tasting. Of course, the wines will be from more recent vintages, but the experience should be quite similar.

That Demon Rum
November 10, 2018
Time: 3:00pm
Location: Wrentham, MA

That Demon Rum
Rum... the mere word conjures all sorts of imagery, from pirates to slaves. Despite what many people think, Rum was the most important spirit in colonial America. So important, that in 1656 Massachusetts passed laws requiring every tavern in the state to serve rum at all times. Rum fueled the economy of colonial America and was one of the contributing factors to the Revolutionary War. Rum established the triangle trade, which firmly entrenched slavery in American culture and ultimately led to the Civil War. Rum was a critical component of cocktail society and a mainstay of Prohibition-era drinking. For much of the late 20th Century, Rum was relegated to the land of frozen cocktails - sickly sweet with one goal in mind. Fortunately, with the craft cocktail and distillation movement, Rum is experiencing a rebirth of sorts. Local makers are embracing our drunken past and putting forth Rums of quality and distinction. At this event we will sample several Rums from all over the globe and look deep into the history, including a few truly classic cocktails.
