All 2017 Wine Tastings

Chardonnay
April 15, 2017
Time: 3:00pm
Location: Wrentham, MA

Chardonnay
It has been several years since Musings looked closely at the state of Chardonnay around the world. A lot has changed and while Chardonnay is still one of the most planted white grape varieties on the planet, eclipsing even the ever-popular Cabernet Sauvignon, many producers have taken the high road. A grape known for its polarizing effects at wine tasting classes and events, Chardonnay is either loved as much as it is loathed. Chardonnay provides the backbone of some of the most expensive wines in the world: white Burgundy and yet is also responsible for a veritable ocean of modestly priced wine coming out of the New World. At this event, we will taste several Chardonnay-based wines from a variety of regions, including its famous home of Burgundy, France.

Napa-Bordeaux Shootout VII
June 3 , 2017
Time: 3:00pm
Location: Wrentham, MA

Napa-Bordeaux Shootout VII
Back in 2004, we conducted a simulation of the famous 1976 tasting that pitted Cabernet-based wines from Napa Valley against the some of the best that Bordeaux had to offer. In 2007, 2009, 2011, 2013 and most recently in 2015 we again reprised the famous standoff. Popular demand has brought this event back to Musings, so once again we will put these two regions to the test. At this event, we will taste a number of wines in a reenactment of the historic 1976 tasting. Of course, the wines will be from more recent vintages, but the experience should be quite similar.

Summer Sippers
June 24, 2017
Time: 3:00pm

Summer Sippers
Summer is a time for easy drinking, high-value wines that require very little thought or demand even less contemplation. The wines of summer should be light and refreshing, pairing well with the usually light repasts or foods from the grill. At this event we will examine several wines, both white and red that are light, refreshing and represent good value.

Wines of France
France is considered by many to be the most important winemaking country in the world. Her wine laws have become the basis of nearly every country's wine law system and with her average production of 1.5 billion gallons of wine a year, she leads the way in total wine production. At this event, we will taste representative wines from all of the important French wine regions, along with artisanal cheeses and breads from those regions.

Art of the Cocktail
October 14, 2017
Time: 3:00pm
Location: Wrentham, MA

Art of the Cocktail
It is believed that the cocktail was invented in the US sometime early in the 19th century. Largely thought of as the sporting crowd's answer to fruit laden punches of the day, the classic cocktail has little in common with today's Slippery Nipple. The classic cocktail is little more than spirits, bitters, sometimes a mixer and sometimes ice, but in the correct combinations, these elements can yield "a quite serviceable concoction". At this event, we will practice the art of mixing the classic cocktail - from the Sidecar to the Old Fashioned and understand the importance of "riffing" behind the bar...

Fortified Wines
December 16, 2017
Time: 3:00pm
Location: Wrentham, MA

Fortified Wines
Much fortified wine was born out of a need to preserve fragile wines on long voyages over land and sea. The presence of alcohol in excess of 15% by volume has a preservative effect on wine. Often sweet, but not always so, fortified wine is usually reserved for after dinner, where it is the accompaniment to dessert or cheese. At this event, we will taste many fortified wines from a variety of regions and styles, both sweet and dry. We will also have a selection of artisanal cheeses, breads and chocolates to complement the wines.
