2009 Wine Tastings

All 2009 Wine Tastings

Vino di Ripasso & Amarone
March 7, 2009
Time: 3:00pm
Location: Wrentham, MA

Vino Repaso & Amarone
The Vino di Ripasso process is used in the Valpolicella region of Italy to make wines of great complexity and concentration.  The process involves allowing new Valpolicella to sit upon the lees of the Amarone wines for several months.  During this time, the young Valpolicella wine takes on some of the subtle characteristics of the finer, stronger Amarone.  Hints of raisins, dried fruits, dark chocolate and dried cherries abound. At this event we will taste a number of Vino di Ripasso Valpolicella wines, as well as some fine Amarone.

Cognac
March 21 , 2009
Time: 3:00pm
Location: Wrentham, MA

Cognac
Cognac is considered brandy, or eau de vie, and is one of the most famous, recognizable spirits in the world. The favorite of kings and emperors alike, Cognac is part magic and part marketing. Cognac is produced by the double distillation (in pot stills) of white wine made from the Ugni Blanc grape, which is aged for several years in “limousin” oak. Cognac has many styles and variations and at this event we will try to examine several, including some very old, single cask Cognac.

Cabernet Franc
April 4 , 2009
Time: 3:00pm
Location: Wrentham, MA

Cabernet Franc
Cabernet Franc is often overlooked parent of the more famous Cabernet Sauvignon grape.  Thought of as “less robust” than its progeny, Cabernet Franc produces wonderful wine with a more refined palate. Tasting of fresh cherries with an often minty quality, Cabernet Franc is produced around the world, often in places where Cabernet Sauvignon cannot ripen effectively. At this event we will taste several Cabernet Franc wines from around the world, even some local beauties.

1997 Barolo
April 25, 2009
Time: 3:00pm
Location: Wrentham, MA

1997 Barolo
Barolo is the king of Italian wine and it always brings a broad smile to my face. Long aging and frequently misunderstood, Barolo can be stingy when it comes to sharing its beauty. At this event we will taste several wines from the storied 1997 vintage. While these wines are still considered young by Barolo standards, spending a few hours with them should begin to unravel their inner beauty.

The Art of the Cocktail
May 9, 2009
Time: 3:00pm
Location: Wrentham, MA

The Art of the Cocktail
It is believed that the cocktail was invented in the US sometime early in the 19th century.  Largely thought of as the sporting crowd’s answer to fruit laden punches of the day, the classic cocktail has little in common with today’s Slippery Nipple.  The classic cocktail is little more than spirits, bitters, sometimes a mixer and sometimes ice, but in the correct combinations, these elements can yield “a quite serviceable concoction.” At this event we will practice the art of mixing the classic cocktail – from the Sidecar to the Old Fashioned.

Time: 3:00pm

Summer Sippers Revisited
Summer is a time for easy drinking, high-value wines that require very little thought or demand even less contemplation. Wines of Quebec
September 12, 2009
Time: 3:00pm
Location: Wrentham, MA

Wines of Quebec
It may be hard to imagine, but just over the border in Quebec, Canada, just forty minutes south of Montreal is a thriving wine country. Most folks are familiar with ice wine from the Niagara Peninsula and the lovely dry wines from British Columbia's Okanagan Valley, but who knew that lovely farm land in southeast Quebec's Brome-Missisquoi region is home to some terrific wineries. The region stretches over 80 miles of beautiful winding country roads and traverses seven hamlets, which are among the most beautiful in Quebec. The wine trail consists of fourteen wineries, making a range of wine from dry to sweet, whites to reds, even traditional method sparkling wine and fortified wine. At this event we will taste several wines from different Quebecoise wineries representing all the styles of wine produced in the region.

Older Wines Part III
September 26, 2009
Time: 3:00pm
Location: Wrentham, MA

Older Wines Part III
Back by popular demand! Most wine today is meant to be consumed the moment it is bought. Ripe, fruity wines that are “ready to drink” are the order of the day. Given this fact, many wine drinkers today have not had a chance to taste older, well aged wines. At this event we will taste several wines that have at least 15 years of bottle age on them. The wines will be from varieties and regions where aging wine is a requirement (like Bordeaux).

Napa/Bordeaux Shootout Part III
October 10, 2009
Time: 3:00pm
Location: Wrentham, MA

Napa/Bordeaux Shootout Part III
Back in 2004, we conducted a simulation of the famous 1976 tasting that pitted Cabernet-based wines from Napa Valley against the some of the best that Bordeaux had to offer. In 2007 we again reprised the famous standoff. Popular demand has brought this event back to Musings, so once again we will put these two regions to the test. At this event we will taste at least six wines in a reenactment of the historic 1976 tasting. Of course, the wines will be from more recent vintages, but the experience should be quite similar.

A History of Italy in Ten Glasses
October 24, 2009
Time: 3:00pm

A History of Italy in Ten Glasses
Italy has a rich and ancient history that has touched or influenced every civilization on the globe. Beginning with the earliest settlements of the Etruscan, moving through the time of the Romans, and into the Renaissance, Italy was considered the "center" of modern society. Even the name Mediterranean translates to "Center of the Earth." In this class we will take a trip through Italian history, linking each major milestone to wines of particular meaning or significance. Ten wines will help tell the story of Italy's storied past, including reds, whites, sparklers and sweet dessert wines - a selection as diverse as the culture that is Italy!

Fortified Wines
December 12, 2009
Time: 3:00pm
Location: Wrentham, MA

Fortified Wines
Much fortified wine was born out of a need to preserve fragile wines on long voyages over land and sea. The presence of alcohol in excess of 15% by volume has a preservative effect on wine. Often sweet, but not always so, fortified wine is usually reserved for after dinner, where it is the accompaniment to dessert or cheese. At this event we will taste six fortified wines from a variety of regions and styles, both sweet and dry.
